In Buy It Now, Michele White examines eBay and its emphasis on community and social norms, revealing the cultural assumptions about gender, race, and sexuality that are reinforced throughout the site. She shows how instructional texts, rule systems, and advertisements ?configure the user,? allowing eBay to indicate how the site is supposed to function while also upholding particular values and practices. White details how eBay reinforces stereotypes about gender and sexuality, looking, for example, at descriptions included in wedding dress listings, and how eBay directs individuals to the Adult Only part of the website when they use the search terms ?gay? and ?lesbian.? She discloses the ways that eBay promises a caring community but its ?Black Americana? category reproduces racism by allowing sellers` narratives that excuse and romanticize slavery and insult African Americans. White also looks at how participants challenge eBay`s categories, rules, and values, examining widely used strategies of resistance by sellers and buyers in the lesbian and gay interest listings. By analyzing the organizational and cultural logics present in eBay, White emphasizes how other Internet settings, including craigslist, are not as transparent, community-oriented, and empowering as they claim. She proposes methods for researching and reconceptualizing new media sites.

Is Bankruptcy the best choice for an unemployed person with $25K in credit card debt?
I was recently terminated from my job in July and am having difficulty finding a new one, but in the meantime I have about $25K in credit card debt and not able to make payments. A credit counselor suggested bankruptcy, but I know the consequences of such action. However, without a job I have no money and I do plan to get one as soon as possible. So please don't tell me to get a job, I already know that and doing everything I can by applying for many different positions. But given my current situation, is bankruptcy my only choice and is it better to do when you are unemployed or have a job? I have also already tried to contact the creditors to negotiate the terms, but no luck since my credit is in such bad shape. Any suggestions?
I forgot to add something...will filing bankruptcy hurt my chances of getting hired for another job?

The field of credit risk and corporate bankruptcy prediction has gained considerable momentum following the collapse of many large corporations around the world, and more recently through the sub-prime scandal in the United States. This book provides a thorough compendium of the different modelling approaches available in the field, including several new techniques that extend the horizons of future research and practice. Topics covered include probit models (in particular bivariate probit modelling), advanced logistic regression models (in particular mixed logit, nested logit and latent class models), survival analysis models, non-parametric techniques (particularly neural networks and recursive partitioning models), structural models and reduced form (intensity) modelling. Models and techniques are illustrated with empirical examples and are accompanied by a careful explanation of model derivation issues. This practical and empirically-based approach makes the book an ideal resource for all those concerned with credit risk and corporate bankruptcy, including academics, practitioners and regulators.

Use a system repair disk or a Windows installation disk and boot to the recovery console and run system restore. Restore your system to a point prior to you having this issue. Once system restore completes, reboot your computer and your problem will be fixed. If you can't do that try booting into Safe Mode by pressing F8 and do a virus scan or do a system restore form there. If you don't have any of those disks, just create one from another computer from the Windows Backup Utility.

"This topical collection of essays emanates from the Consumer Protection in Europe: Theory and Practice duo colloquium in December 2009. That conference explored consumer protection in Europe and covered topics which are even more relevant today given the revisions to the proposed Consumer Rights Directive, the appointment of an Expert Group on a common frame of reference and the Green Paper on European Contract Law. It was organised within the work programme Credit and Debt: Protecting the Vulnerable inEurope - a project placing emphasis on vulnerability in financial transactions. This volume focuses on consumer protection in credit and investments in the context of unprecedented turmoil in those markets and EU harmonisation initiatives in the area. Itexplores key issues such as responsible lending, information disclosure, consumer confidence, the regulation of consumer investment services and the protection of bank depositors"--
Guide to the European Union The Final Adoption of the Treaty of Lisbon gives the 27-member European Union new momentum as it enters the second decade of the 21st century, more that half a century since the six-member European Economic Community was established in 1957. That the countries of the euro area alone now account for a greater proportion of world exports of goods and services than the United States shows how far the EU has come and how, given strength and unity, it has the potential to provide a counterbalance between America and China. This revised and updated edition of this much-acclaimed guide to the working of the European Union is invaluable for anyone who wants to understand how the EU developed, how it works and the challenges it faces. Included in its comprehensive coverage are: How the institutions and committees work both in theory and in practice Where the money for the EU comes from and where it goes Facts and figures about the bureaucracy The single market and what it means for business The effects and implications of monetary and economic union and the introduction of the euro How enlargement will change the EU and the political considerations that will determine which other countries join The implications of the Lisbon treaty Every sphere of EU activity from workers’ and women’s rights to fishing and farming Now in its tenth edition, The Economist Guide to the European Union is well established as the most clear and comprehensive guide to how the EU operates. For everyone who lives and works in the EU – and for others who do business with EU countries – there is no better source of reference.

Despite speculation about Saudi interests and loyalties that have been directed at the country since 9/11, Arabia remains the key US ally in the Arab Middle East. M¿noret debunks the facile notions about Saudi society, and focuses our attention on present political and economic realities that cannot be reduced to essentialist "tribalist" ideas. M¿noret illustrates the emerging autonomous--and Islamic--manifestations of Saudi national identity, fiercely reformist rather than medieval, complex and varied rather than merely a justification or support for the rule of the al-Saud royal family. Underlying this account is a sophisticated economic history of the Saudi state, from the eighteenth century to the present day, which details all the alliances and manoeuvres that have brought the country and its rulers to their current precarious position.

The first decade of the 21st Century has been disastrous for financial institutions, derivatives and risk management. Counterparty credit risk has become the key element of financial risk management, highlighted by the bankruptcy of the investment bank Lehman Brothers and failure of other high profile institutions such as Bear Sterns, AIG, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The sudden realisation of extensive counterparty risks has severely compromised the health of global financial markets. Counterparty risk is now a key problem for all financial institutions. This book explains the emergence of counterparty risk during the recent credit crisis. The quantification of firm-wide credit exposure for trading desks and businesses is discussed alongside risk mitigation methods such as netting and collateral management (margining) and central counterparties. Banks and other financial institutions have been recently developing their capabilities for pricing counterparty risk and these elements are considered in detail via a characterisation of credit value adjustment (CVA). The implications of an institution valuing their own default via debt value adjustment (DVA) and funding costs (FVA) are also considered at length. Portfolio management and hedging of CVA are described in full. Wrong?way counterparty risks are addressed in detail in relation to interest rate, foreign exchange, commodity and credit derivative products. Regulatory capital for counterparty risk, including the recent Basel III requirements for CVA VAR is discussed. The management of counterparty risk within an institution by a "CVA desk" is also discussed in detail. Finally, the design and benefits of central clearing, a recent development to attempt to control the rapid growth of counterparty risk, is considered. Hedging aspects, together with the associated instruments such as credit defaults swaps (CDSs) and contingent CDS (CCDS) are described in full. This book is unique in being practically focused but al
