The letter said to call a phone number to activate, didn't mention anything about online activation. But I would prefer online activation.

If it does not say there there is an online option, then obviously there is no such option. Of course you need to "even" activate it. How else does the bank know that you received the card to authorize purchases??
Do you think that these directions are just put there for fun???? They mean EXACTLY what it says. Activate by phone does NOT mean activate online. Activate in 30 days does not mean activate it only if you feel like it.
