Hi, I will graduate from SFSU in mechanical engineering within 1.5 years, what should I need to do to get into a mechanical engineering graduate program at Cal / Stanford?
For starters, I am holding a F-1 visa, in a leadership position in an engineering society, am maintaining a GPA of 3.5x, working on-campus as a tutor.
Also would it hurt my chances if I would take some of my GE classes as "Credit / No Credit"? I feel my chances are a little hurt since I lack the research lab experience (there is none offered in SFSU).

A very high gre score is good. Since you are in engineering you should at most get one math question wrong...but even then that drops you down to like the 80% percentile. So, study hard. I had a good math and median english score but a 3.85 gpa. I agree with you that lab experience would be a plus. Have you thought about internships at a unversity research group? Even if it delayed your graduation it would probably be helpful especially at making sure grad school is for you.
Work hard. Get 4.0s in your next classes if you can. These are great schools. You will really enjoy them. But it's hard work so get used to it now.
